Texas Tech football has another defensive star receiving national attention, and this time it's senior cornerback Brice Pollock making his case as one of college football's elite playmakers.
Pollock was named one of 15 semifinalists for the 2026 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award on Tuesday, placing the Red Raiders standout in contention for the honor presented annually to the nation's best defensive back.

For a Texas Tech defense that's helped fuel the program's impressive season, the recognition is another indication of just how valuable Pollock has become.
Through seven games, Pollock has recorded 19 tackles, including 16 solo stops, two interceptions and six pass breakups. His eight passes defended are tied for 15th nationally among FBS players.
But the numbers only tell part of the story.
Pollock has developed into a disruptive presence in the secondary, combining aggressive coverage with the instincts to turn opposing quarterbacks' mistakes into game-changing opportunities.
His signature performance came October 3 against Colorado, when he intercepted two passes during Texas Tech's convincing 29-7 road victory.
That afternoon earned him Jim Thorpe Award National Defensive Back of the Week honors and helped strengthen his candidacy for the award.
Pollock's emergence isn't exactly surprising.
The veteran cornerback entered the season with significant expectations after collecting five interceptions and 48 tackles in 2025, earning first-team All-Big 12 recognition from both the conference and Associated Press.
He's continued that production while helping establish Texas Tech as a legitimate Big 12 contender.
And now he's competing against some of the biggest names in college football.
The semifinalist field includes Georgia's KJ Bolden, Notre Dame's Leonard Moore, Ohio State's Jaylen McClain and Clemson's Ashton Hampton.
Pollock is among a select group of defensive backs still competing for the prestigious award named after legendary athlete Jim Thorpe.
Established in 1986, the honor recognizes excellence in three areas: "performance on the field, athletic ability and character."
The competition will narrow considerably next month.
Three finalists will be announced November 24 during an ESPN presentation, with the winner revealed December 11 at The Home Depot College Football Awards.
For Pollock, however, there's more immediate business ahead.
Texas Tech returns home Saturday, October 31, for a nationally televised Top 25 showdown against Arizona at Galaxy Stadium. ESPN will carry the matchup.
It's another opportunity for the senior cornerback to strengthen his national reputation against a ranked opponent.
And considering Pollock's ability to make quarterbacks regret throwing in his direction, Arizona's offense would be wise to know exactly where he's lining up.
