Can Kentucky’s Kenny Minchey earn first round buzz for 2027 NFL Draft with big game vs. Tennessee? appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Kentucky football rises as the biggest surprise across the SEC. Enough for the Wildcats to spark some College Football Playoff conversations. They’ll even draw NFL Draft eyeballs on Saturday against Tennessee, largely thanks to quarterback Kenny Minchey.

Minchey is suddenly igniting first round conversations. Including earning this projection by Tim Crean of ClutchPoints on Oct. 30: The 32nd pick of April’s draft.

But Saturday’s contest in Knoxville presents Minchey with his biggest test yet in breaking down his first round chances.

Already the Volunteers rattled Alabama star quarterback Keelon Russell in Tennessee’s 26-10 rout on Oct. 17. Russell delivered a dismal 147 passing yards and two interceptions as Tennessee lit up victory cigars and danced in the locker room after.

Even Texas star quarterback Arch Manning struggled against this same defense; throwing for 201 yards but getting picked off once. The Vols never allowed a touchdown from Manning’s arm or legs, despite Texas winning 20-17.

One more dual-threat passer delivered one of his worst outings inside Neyland Stadium: Bryum Brown of Auburn. Tennessee intercepted him twice while containing him to 159 yards passing. Brown turned to his legs in tallying 107 yards and one touchdown, but took the 24-14 loss to the Vols.

So Rocky Top has surfaced as a trap house for star quarterbacks this season. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles surely will draw up a confuse-and-attack scheme to rattle Minchey; just like he did for the aforementioned three SEC quarterbacks.

Minchey must overcome the noise and Knowles’ pre-snap disguises to produce a breakout outing here. The UK quarterback also will know that Knowles is going to have his cornerbacks jam the Wildcat receivers at the line of scrimmage to disrupt their routes.

Knowles, who previously won a 2024 national title with Ohio State, leans into a lot of cerebral elements to mind twist quarterbacks. Then he blends that with attacking the gut (the center area) while getting his edge rushers to attack from a wider angle in collapsing the pocket.

Still, Minchey can aim to find weaknesses in the middle. He and coach Will Stein could see lots of openings at the intermediate part of the field. That’s because Knowles likes to play a three-high safety look while sending one linebacker on a blitz. Stein can easily call for more crossers, digs or slant routes to exploit the Vols defense. Minchey brings a strong processing acumen on the field where he’s able to identify the defensive weakness and go after it.

Minchey’s biggest trait for this game, though, will be his composure. Tennessee’s defense won’t be the only one that’ll test Minchey’s mental state. Same with the rabid noise coming from the 101,915-seat venue. Neyland is historically one of the SEC’s most hostile environments and the fans will be out in full force for the Saturday showdown.

Where Kenny Minchey could catapult in NFL Draft

This 2027 draft class of quarterbacks have seen multiple names rearrange the list.

Manning went from the popular choice for top pick to analysts believing he needs one more year. Oregon star quarterback Dante Moore, meanwhile, got shut down by the Ducks following his scary Sept. 26 concussion while still garnering mid-first round potential. Now Oklahoma State star Drew Mestemaker and Miami’s Darian Mensah are shooting up the board.

But Minchey is capable of altering this list too. He’s bringing 1,755 yards with 14 touchdowns and just one pick to Knoxville. UK knocking off annual rival Tennessee can boost his draft resume too. Plus Kentucky winning out and landing one of the top four spots in the CFP will only further catapult Minchey to near the top of the first round draft board.
