Kamario Taylor's season appears to be done.

According to multiplereports, the Mississippi State quarterback is expected to miss the remainder of the 2026 college football season due to a toe injury, which could require surgery as soon as Wednesday, Oct. 28. The Bulldogs' first-year starter is expected to see a foot specialist on Tuesday.

Taylor, who returned this past week against Oklahoma, has been dealing with an injury for several weeks.

Speaking after Mississippi State's game vs. the Sooners, Bulldogs coach Jeff Lebby offered the following injury update on Taylor:

"He felt it a little bit, so it felt like the right thing to do was get him out of the game," Lebby said. "As we move forward, we'll know a lot more tomorrow and we'll know more Monday as we move through it."

Mississippi State travels to No. 11 Texas at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 31. Here's the latest on Taylor's injury:

Kamario Taylor injury update

Taylor returned from a one-game absence last week against Oklahoma. However, his return was brief, as he exited the game against the Sooners near the end of the first quarter following an injury during a quarterback scramble. He did not return.

He was ruled out for Mississippi State's game vs. LSU on Oct. 17 with a then-undisclosed injury that he aggravated two weeks prior, before the Bulldogs' bye week, against Alabama. He exited the Bulldogs' Week 5 game vs. Alabama in the fourth quarter with an injury that saw him wear a walking boot on the sidelines after being evaluated.

Thamel reported on Oct. 27 that Taylor injured his toe in Mississippi State's top-20 win over Missouri on Sept. 26. He is expected to make a full recovery as well.

Who is Mississippi State's backup quarterback?

Mississippi State has two backup quarterbacks: Billy Puckett and AJ Swann.

Puckett has been the Bulldogs' primary backup in eight of the last nine quarters. Last week against Oklahoma, Puckett completed 17 of 24 passes for 158 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

As noted by the Clarion Ledger, part of the USA TODAY Network, Lebby said after the Oklahoma game that Puckett and Swann will compete for starting reps if Taylor can't play against Texas. Swann has not played this season.
