The Mississippi State Bulldogs will be without quarterback Kamario Taylor for the remainder of the season due to toe surgery. They started Parker Puckett for two games after Taylor’s injury, but the freshman’s performance wasn’t up to par.

So now, Mississippi State head coach Jeff Lebby is set to change things up for their big game against Texas.

“It’s been trending toward Mississippi State starting AJ Swann at quarterback today against No. 11 Texas, sources tell CBSSports,” Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reported on X, formerly Twitter.

“Swann had been the third-string QB behind Kamario Taylor, who is now out for the season, and Parker Puckett, who was previously Taylor’s backup. Before Mississippi State, Swann played at Vanderbilt, LSU and App State.”

Puckett did not perform well in either of his starts against LSU and Oklahoma. He combined for just 278 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in those two games, both of which the Bulldogs lost.

Swann now looks set to take over for the Bulldogs against the Longhorns. The senior played for Appalachian State last season, where he threw for 1,495 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Luckily for him, he will not be facing Texas’ star edge rusher, Colin Simmons, who’s been ruled out with a high ankle sprain.

With this change, Lebby will be hoping Swann can jumpstart a passing game that has stagnated after Taylor went out. Top wide receiver Anthony Evans III, in particular, has seen his production plummet under Puckett. After four 110+ receiving yard games in five, including 12 catches for 166 yards and two touchdowns against Alabama, Evans has had just 73 total receiving yards with no touchdowns in Puckett’s two starts.
