It’s Election Day, but it’s also College Football Playoff ranking reveal day, and strong reactions to the ranking would have you believe those are the results determining the future of democracy.

On Tuesday night, Rece Davis hosted ESPN’s College Football Playoff rankings show alongside Booger McFarland, Greg McElroy, and Joey Galloway. As the show wore on, the CFP selection committee reestablished itself as a polarizing group.

The undefeated Miami Hurricanes earned the No. 1 spot, and that is the only team everyone agreed deserved its particular spot on the list. McElroy cracked that the selection committee went “1-for-25,” and Davis identified this year’s initial ranking contains “more questions and more head-scratching moments” than any initial ranking he remembered covering.

Davis couldn’t hide his shock when he revealed Utah at No. 3 and Notre Dame at No. 11, and Galloway tried to wrap his head around Alabama slotting in at No. 5.

“There are a couple of instances where it looks like head-to-head matters a little bit with BYU and Notre Dame, and then a couple of instances in which they do not,” Davis said.

McFarland took up for Texas, as the Longhorns came in at No. 7 despite solid wins over Ohio State, Tennessee, and Ole Miss, while McElroy took issue with Ohio State seemingly getting punished for scheduling difficult opponents.

More broadly, McFarland said, “I just think right now, the committee’s kind of getting their feet wet. What are we gonna value? How’s this season gonna play out? Because, right now, there’s really no rhyme or reason why some of these teams are ranked where they are.”

Galloway pointed out that the truth will emerge after this week’s slate of games, which features several head-to-head matchups amongst Top 25 teams. ESPN’s Peter Burns shared that opinion on X.

“I would not be surprised if, after this weekend, there is great movement on this board,” Galloway said. “I almost feel like there has to be movement on this board. And so we are in the beginning, and I’m a little bit more bothered than normally in Week 1. But I have to tell myself there’s a lot of games left to be played, and if your team isn’t where you want them to be, there’s time for them to work their way into it.”

we need to start quizzing the cfp selection committee to see if they are actually watching football

The ESPN has mentioned that the Committee may be factoring in Julian Sayin’s injury in Ohio State’s ranking. This is by far the stupidest thing the CFP does and the rule should be amended. There’s no other sport that considers player injuries to keep teams out of the postseason and it’s terrible for player safety.

We have seen some terrible CFP rankings over the years, but this set is particularly insane and inconsistent.

— Nicole Auerbach (@NicoleAuerbach) November 4, 2026

Expanding to 24 teams does not solve the problem of a wildly inconsistent selection committee.

— Nicole Auerbach (@NicoleAuerbach) November 4, 2026

My argument has always been for a Steve Kornacki-type, someone showing us all the team sheets and metrics on a big screen and explaining what everyone in the room used to evaluate teams. What they actually saw.

Would be more transparent at least.

Who is maddest right now about the CFP rankings:

1. Tennessee fans
2. Wake Forest fans
3. Ohio State fans
4. UCLA fans
5. Me, for getting angry despite telling myself not to get angry

— Nicole Auerbach (@NicoleAuerbach) November 4, 2026

Without question, the wildest, strangest set of CFP rankings I can remember.

I don’t even know where to start.

Good thing a whole bunch of these teams are playing each other this weekend.

— Stewart Mandel (@slmandel) November 4, 2026

Well, the message is clear: The committee loves the SEC and hates everyone else.

— Stewart Mandel (@slmandel) November 4, 2026

Well all the SEC propaganda that was ALL WE HEARD ABOUT ALL OFF SEASON worked. Money well spent Commissioner Sankey

Alabama, which owns multiple losses and a defeat by 16 points to a Tennessee team that is not even in the projected playoff field, is ranked No. 5 in the initial College Football Playoff committee rankings.

What an elite night on this platform. Breathless election posts interspersed with absolute incredulity about the relative rankings of college football teams, and also the Wild are playing.

Thankfully playoffs don’t start today

There are other initial rankings that have been worse in the CFP era, but this one is probably the most nonsensical. They’re just bad.

— Shehan Jeyarajah (@ShehanJeyarajah) November 4, 2026

Is the CFP rankings committee just Nick Saban?

— Josh Pate (@JoshPateCFB) November 4, 2026

This CFP committee is about to reward the SEC for cannibalizing itself while punishing any other conference if it does the same

— Stephen Means (@Stephen_Means) November 4, 2026

Remember, the CFP Committee made a terrible mistake in last year’s initial rankings and it haunted them all the way until the end. Let’s see if this one can avoid common sense errors.

— Ari Wasserman (@AriWasserman) November 3, 2026

A 24-team CFP tonight would be an SEC Invitational with nine of its 16 teams in the field.

— Brandon Marcello (@bmarcello) November 4, 2026

The worst part of the CFP selection process remains the committee chair trying to explain things. It’s a difficult job, but they rarely give a good explanation.

I’ve been in the room and done their mocks. They have good data. They don’t express it nearly enough.

— Brendan Porath (@BrendanPorath) November 4, 2026

And that will be my last comment about tonight’s rankings because in a month, the first CFP ranking will be the most useless list ever created.
