Texas A&M football is running out of room for mistakes, and Saturday's trip to South Carolina might be one of the Aggies' most difficult challenges remaining on the schedule.

Mike Elko's team enters the matchup at 4-4 overall and 1-4 in SEC play, having lost three of its last four conference games.

Meanwhile, No. 23 South Carolina is gaining momentum behind quarterback LaNorris Sellers and three consecutive victories.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, with ESPN carrying the game.

The Aggies enjoyed a bye week following their 31-20 loss to Alabama on October 24, giving Elko's coaching staff additional time to address an offense that has struggled against quality SEC competition.

Quarterback Marcel Reed remains the biggest concern.

Reed completed 14 of 21 passes for 163 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against Alabama. Although he also scored a rushing touchdown, his inability to consistently threaten defenses through the air has become a recurring problem.

That could be particularly troublesome against a South Carolina team playing its best football of the season.

The Gamecocks improved to 5-3 with Saturday's impressive 42-25 victory at Oklahoma.

Sellers accounted for five touchdowns, throwing for 301 yards and three scores while adding 96 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

South Carolina finished with 521 total yards, demonstrating the explosive offensive potential Texas A&M must prepare to contain.

Injuries could also influence Saturday's matchup.

Texas A&M entered its bye week without offensive lineman Blake Ivy and receivers Terry Bussey and Kelshaun Johnson. Johnson's status bears watching after he missed the Alabama game, while fellow receiver Mario Craver has also dealt with an undisclosed injury.

South Carolina faces its own personnel concerns.

Running back Matthew Fuller suffered an ankle injury against Oklahoma that required surgery, while Jawarn Howell has missed time with a shoulder problem.

Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer indicated Sunday that Howell is expected to return this week. Defensive back Quay'sheed Scott could also return after missing three games.

History favors Texas A&M, which owns a 10-2 advantage in the series.

However, the Aggies have lost their last two visits to Columbia, falling 30-24 in 2022 and 44-20 in 2024.

Last season's matchup produced one of the rivalry's most memorable finishes when Texas A&M overcame a 27-point halftime deficit to defeat South Carolina 31-30.

Repeating that kind of comeback won't be the preferred strategy Saturday.

The Aggies need Reed to protect the football, their offensive line to generate a consistent running game and their defense to prevent Sellers from taking over with his legs.

A victory would move Texas A&M within one win of bowl eligibility.

A loss would leave Elko's team facing an increasingly uncomfortable final stretch.

For an Aggies program that entered the season expecting considerably more, Saturday represents an opportunity to salvage some momentum before the season slips further away.
