This young NCAA basketball season has already seen its share of upsets, with Oklahoma’s embarrassing defeat to East Texas A&M still fresh in the memory. But Valparaiso added to that list with a dramatic last-second win to bring down Purdue 83-80 in a wild double-overtime game that included two buzzer beaters.

Valpo guard Justus McNair hit the game-winning jumper in the second OT as time expired to send Matt Painter’s Boilermakers to 0-2 on the season.

With four seconds left in the game, Valpo inbounded the ball from the opposite baseline. McNair got the inbounds pass and raced down the court toward the right corner. And with a jump stop, he rose up and knocked down the game-winning shot, stunning the home Purdue crowd as his teammates celebrated wildly around him.

Valpo found themselves down by as many as 15 points in the first half as they entered halftime trailing 32-20. But they stormed back in the second half to force overtime. Purdue looked on course to get the win in the first overtime as they led by three with four seconds left. But Rakim Chaney was able to get the offensive rebound from his own missed free throw and hit a 3-pointer to force a second OT.

Chaney, a true freshman, led the way for the Beacons with 35 points, eight rebounds and six assists. McNair added 17 points as Valpo improved to 2-0 on the season.

For Purdue, Daniel Jacobson paced the team with 28 points and 10 rebounds. The Boilermakers struggled with their shooting all game long, going 38% from the field and 5-of-28 (18%) on 3-pointers. They will look to finally get their first win of the season against Illinois State on Monday.
