The first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2026 season immediately produced one of the sport's most familiar debates.
Alabama is ranked No. 5 despite carrying two losses, while Tennessee sits at No. 13 even after defeating the Crimson Tide earlier this season. The placement creates an obvious question for fans trying to understand the committee's evaluation process. How can one team rank eight places ahead of an opponent that beat it?
The answer involves how the committee weighs an entire résumé rather than allowing one result to determine the order.
Head-to-head results are not the only factor
Alabama enters the rankings with a 6-2 record, while Tennessee also stands at 6-2. The Crimson Tide have faced several highly ranked opponents, including Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and South Carolina. That difficult schedule appears to have strengthened Alabama's overall evaluation despite its losses.

Tennessee's head-to-head victory remains meaningful, but the committee does not automatically place every winning team above every opponent it defeated.
Committee chair Hunter Yurachek explained that head-to-head comparisons receive particular consideration when teams are grouped closely in the evaluation process.
That distinction helps explain how Alabama and Tennessee can be separated by eight positions. It does not mean fans have to agree with the result.
Alabama has little room for error
The Crimson Tide travel to face No. 14 LSU on Saturday, creating another major opportunity to improve their resume. A win would strengthen Alabama's position near the top of the rankings. A loss would give the Crimson Tide three defeats and potentially create significant pressure heading into the final month.
Tennessee also faces an important test against No. 6 Kentucky. The Volunteers have an opportunity to improve their standing with another victory over a highly ranked opponent. Those games could dramatically change the debate.

The committee has created an early storyline
The rankings are not the final playoff bracket. Teams still have opportunities to improve their positions, and the committee will release additional rankings before the final selections in December.
But the initial order matters because it establishes how the committee currently views each team's résumé.
Alabama's placement suggests its strength of schedule has received considerable respect. Tennessee's ranking demonstrates that a major head-to-head win does not automatically guarantee a higher position.
That combination will keep fans arguing until the teams' remaining results provide more clarity.
