With roughly seven minutes remaining in a heated Big 12 showdown between Cincinnati and Houston, the atmopshere inside TDECU Stadium abruptly changed. The crowd fell silent, and the passion and energy inside the building quickly turned into concern.
Cincinnati wide receiver JV Gibson suffered a frightening collision with Houston strong safety Jordan Allen while running a post route toward the end zone. The impact left Cincinnati’s leading receiver motionless on the field, prompting officials to throw flags for pass interference and targeting penalties.
But the officiating decisions quickly became secondary. As Gibson remained down with an apparent head injury, medical personnel rushed onto the field to attend the receiver. Members of the Cincinnati roster left the sideline to gathered around their teammate, kneeling nearby as trainers continued their evaluations. Gibson’s parents eventually made their way to the field as well.
The game was delayed 16 minutes as medical personnel stabilized Gibson, placed him on a stretcher, and transported out of TDECU Stadium. His father accompanied him on the back of the medical cart. Gibson subsequently made his way to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. Before his departure, Cincinnati Athletics reported the receiver as “alert and moving all extremities.”
“Our personnel did an amazing job to get out there very quickly, they were right on top of JV,” Cincinnati head coach Scott Satterfield said in the immediate aftermath of the game. “Ultimately, they got him in a good place there. He was moving all four extremities on command. They took him to the hospital for precautionary reasons, and obviously they got to do their CT scans and those type of things. I don’t have an update, but hopefully everything checks out great. I thought JV was playing awesome tonight and unfortunately that happened to him. Prayers go out to JV and his family, but it’s a blessing for him to move all four extremities. It’s always very scary, and scary for our team.”
In a later update, Cincinnati’s official Twitter account confirmed that Gibson had been discharged from Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and traveled back to Cincinnati with the team.
