The Southeastern Conference has established itself as one of the premier leagues in men’s college basketball; however, ESPN's rankings suggest the conference is slightly behind the Big Ten and Big 12.
ESPN recently released its power rankings of the nation’s top men’s college basketball conferences, placing the SEC at No. 3 heading into the 2026-27 season.
Despite the SEC’s placement, Florida remains one of the conference’s biggest reasons for optimism.
Florida, seeking its second title in three seasons, convincingly handled the Miami Hurricanes in Tampa, showing everyone that Todd Golden’s squad has what it takes to compete for another championship.
Much of that confidence comes from Florida's roster retention. The experienced frontcourt featuring Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, and Rueben Chinyelu gives the Gators one of the best cores in college basketball.
The Gators' gritty defensive backcourt of Boogie Fland and Denzel Aberdeen proved to be pivotal in Monday’s win, holding the Canes to 24% shooting from the perimeter and making the ball stick, allowing only six total assists.
While they appear capable of competing with the nation’s best, ESPN expressed some uncertainty about the SEC’s overall championship potential.
The network projects the conference to earn 10 NCAA Tournament bids, and has also given the SEC an average projected seed of 5.98, a bid percentage of 62.5% and a 20% chance of producing the national champion.
Texas was identified as a potential factor in boosting the conference’s overall strength. The Longhorns could help elevate the SEC into the conversation among the nation’s elite leagues, although ESPN suggested the conference is more likely to be very good than dominant.
The Gators and Longhorns will have a chance to improve the SEC’s national standing when the Orange and Blue travel to Austin on Jan. 2 at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN, a matchup labeled the conference’s game of the year.
