MINNEAPOLIS - For the first time in 12 years, Iowa football has left Minnesota without Floyd of Rosedale.
The 15th-ranked Hawkeyes sputtered badly against the unranked Gophers, falling in a 13-10 defensive slugfest at Huntington Bank Stadium on Saturday. A lot went wrong, but what did the numbers say?
Here are a few numbers that stood out from Iowa's loss.
6: Iowa hasn't been taking the ball away that much in 2026, but when it does, cornerback Deshaun Lee is usually the one making a play. The senior tallied an interception in the first half to pave the way for the Hawkeyes' first points of the game. Lee leads Iowa with three picks this year and now has six career interceptions.
8: Defensive lineman Bryce Hawthorne has been tremendous over the last few weeks, and he continued his stellar performance on Saturday with a career-high eight tackles.
10: Iowa's 10 points on Saturday marked its lowest scoring output of the season and lowest since the 18-16 loss to Oregon at Kinnick Stadium on Nov. 8 of last year.
The number 10 was also significant for a positive reason, too. Star linebacker Cam Buffington tallied 10 tackles (second-most on the team) and he also executed a fake punt that led to a Hawkeye first down. The successful fake punt was Iowa's first since a 2017 victory over Illinois, but the Hawkeyes ultimately couldn't score from it.
25: Penalties have been a problem for Iowa all season, and that was again the case on Saturday. The Hawkeyes committed six penalties for 25 yards against Minnesota and now have more fouls in 2026 (43) then they did all of last season (39).
37: Iowa's passing attack was anemic for the majority of this game, but there were two notable plays in this game. Both came on Iowa's only touchdown drive, with Tony Diaz getting things going with a season-long 57-yard catch and run and then Reece Vander Zee following a few plays later with a 37-yard score. The play happened to be the Hawkeyes' longest passing play of the season.
90: Two weeks after tallying over 268 yards on the ground against Washington, Iowa's run game returned to its struggling ways on Saturday. The Hawkeyes mustered just 90 yards against a shaky Minnesota run defense, with L.J. Phillips leading the crew with only 25 yards on seven carries.
4-1: That was the turnover battle in this one, and it clearly didn't favor the Hawkeyes. Quarterbacks Jeremy Hecklinski and Hank Brown committed a combined three turnovers, with running back Braeden Jackson's fumble in the second half being the other. The four turnovers were Iowa's most in a game since a 2023 shutout loss to Penn State, but that wasn't the only miscue.
Though it's not technically classified as a turnover, the Hawkeyes' first punt attempt of the game was blocked by Minnesota, setting up a Gopher field goal.
54%: Iowa's quarterbacks struggled mightily in this one, leading to a collective completion percentage of 54%. Hecklinski started the game, but never made it out of the first half after going 9-for-16 for 62 yards and one interception. Brown didn't fare much better, though, completing 11 of 21 passes for 136 yards and one touchdown. This was a game to forget for the quarterback room.
