Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire spoke at his media availability on Monday after a weekend in which Texas Tech picked up its second ranked win of the season, defeating No. 22 Arizona 34-26.
Q: On Saturday, J'Koby Williams and Thomas Castellanos combined for 292 yards on the ground and over five yards per carry. How much of that was a specific exploitation of Arizona's front, and how much of that do you want to be part of the identity of the offense to lean on in November.

McGuire: Anytime you can stop the run and run the football late in the season, you have an opportunity to win. In the second half, we had some really good checks, some great adjustments by Mack (Leftwich) and our run game, so we were really able to get going.
Q: The team is 13-3 in November under you, what's gone into that success and how do you keep that going?
McGuire: Continuing to never be satisfied, there are always things, no matter how good you're playing; there are things you can always get better at. Our guys have a belief system in what we do, and they believe in the people in the building as far as our training staff, they're still pushing them at a really high level.
Q: It seems like we've been talking about improving the offensive line since you gut here: Ran for over 300 yards and only allowed one sack against a very good Arizona defense is this one of the best performances by a defensive line under you?
McGuire: There are guys that are playing their best football, extremely consistent. Howard Sampson, I constantly talk to NFL scouts about him; I mean, his growth as a person and a player since he came here has been outstanding. We got Cash inserted into the starting lineup; he brings a lot of juice. Sheridan (Wilson) has been very consistent, and I think, especially since that Colorado game, that Jordan (Church) and Jacob Ponton have continued to get better every single week.
Q: Coach you guys obviously have had success stopping the run this year, but how much more difficult is that with the two-headed monster that will be here this weekend?
McGuire: This is a total different animal, number one they stress you on the perimeter at a really high level. They do a lot of different stuff, a lot of different formations, to put their guys in a good position where you're gonna have to make one-on-one tackles.
Q: Now with Commissioner Yormark set to leave the conference, what is kind of the biggest challenge for the next Big 12 commissioner just navigating this conference and the college football landscape overall?

McGuire: Well don't throw tortillas at me, but I will say this: I talked to Commissioner Yormark this morning, and you can say whatever you feel, Tech fan-wise, but he definitely 100 percent came into a conference that was on its heels and made the conference better than where he found it, without a doubt. I think the next guy that comes in has gotta understand the landscape of college football and what it's gonna look like, if theres another expansion coming then we gotta make sure the Big 12 is in a spot to where if there is that we're able to add some really good teams.
No. 13 Texas Tech will host West Virginia at Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. CT.
