The South Carolina Gamecocks walked into Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on Saturday as the road team against a favored Oklahoma Sooners side and left with a 42-25 win, their third straight SEC victory. Afterward, Shane Beamer made a claim about what that run says about South Carolina’s place in the conference this season.
The streak followed a 2-3 start that included an 0-3 opening in league play. South Carolina beat the then-No. 16 Florida Gators, then knocked off the No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers 27-24 in Columbia on Oct. 24 when Malik Orsan kicked a field goal as time expired, and the trip to Norman came seven days later.

“Really awesome night, proud of our football team. We challenged them all week. Nobody in the SEC has been able to do what we did tonight, and that’s come off a big win and follow it up the very next week with another big win.” Beamer said.
Florida upset the Texas Longhorns on the road on Oct. 17 and then lost 27-8 to the Georgia Bulldogs in its next game, the kind of letdown Beamer was describing. South Carolina, at 5-3 and 3-3 in the SEC, has gone the other direction twice in a row, and the second of those wins came away from home against a team that played in the College Football Playoff last season.

Why South Carolina’s turnaround starts with LaNorris Sellers

LaNorris Sellers completed 19 of 24 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns and ran 13 times for a game-high 96 yards and two more scores. His 84-yard touchdown pass to DJ Black in the second quarter stretched the lead to 21-7, and a 79-yard strike to Mazeo Bennett in the fourth answered Oklahoma’s first offensive touchdown.
The margin held up despite South Carolina losing the turnover battle 3-0, including a Sellers interception that Kip Lewis returned 30 yards for Oklahoma’s first points. The Gamecocks piled up 521 yards, enough to make those giveaways survivable on the road.
