Texas made a late move for Jason Crenshaw. Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns got their man. The 2027 linebacker out of Prattville (Ala.) has flipped his commitment from Georgia Tech to Texas following an official visit to Austin over the weekend.

Crenshaw committed to the Yellow Jackets during the summer and remained solid with the Yellow Jackets entering the fall. Texas offered earlier this season and continued its pursuit. The Longhorns eventually got him on campus for their win over Ole Miss.

He left Austin impressed. A couple of days later, he knew where he wanted to play college football.

“It was hard,” Crenshaw told Rivals. “I thought about it for a day or so coming off the visit, but then talking with my parents and talking with my coaches at my school, I was just like, this is it.”

The visit gave Crenshaw a closer look at the Longhorns’ defensive plans. His meeting with linebackers coach Johnny Nansen proved especially important. Crenshaw liked the approach Nansen took during their conversation.

“He’s very honest,” Crenshaw said. “He’s very strict, very stern. Coach Nansen’s a fun guy, but very strict and stern when it comes down to the game of football.

“I really like his attention to detail. He was teaching me certain things during the meeting that could help me where I am currently right now. My time with Coach Nansen was great.”

That meeting was the highlight of his official visit. It helped Crenshaw see how he could develop in Texas’ defense.

The Longhorns also made him feel wanted throughout the weekend. Crenshaw recalled a moment before the game when Sarkisian stopped to acknowledge him during the team’s arrival.

“Coach Sark was first, and I saw him, and he actually stopped and said what’s up to me,” Crenshaw said. “They showed me that they want me. They continued to show me that all visit.”

Crenshaw also spent time with Sarkisian away from the field.

“Coach is a great coach, and I really enjoyed having lunch with him and just being on the phone with him. He showed me lots of love, and you can tell he’s passionate about his players and about winning. I’m really excited to get the opportunity to play for him.”

Crenshaw is excited about his future in Austin

Texas’ game-day atmosphere added to the experience. Crenshaw watched the Ole Miss game from the front row near Bevo. The crowd, cannon and pregame excitement left a lasting impression.

“It was definitely a crazy atmosphere,” Crenshaw said. “I was actually front row above Bevo, and to the right of me was the cannon. It was crazy. It was loud, and the orange smoke was one of the craziest things I’ve experienced.”

The decision wasn’t easy.

Crenshaw originally expected to stick with Georgia Tech. He had built strong relationships with the Yellow Jackets and felt good about his commitment when the season began.

Texas changed that with its offer, consistent communication and official visit.

“I thought I was going to stick it through with Georgia Tech going into the season,” Crenshaw said. “But that Texas offer got my attention, then the visit showed me a lot. It was not easy. I didn’t see this happening when the season started.”

Crenshaw returned home, talked through the decision with his family and high school coaches, and ultimately chose Texas. The Longhorns entered his recruitment late. They made their opportunity count.

Now Crenshaw is headed to Austin to play for Sarkisian and the Longhorns.

“Texas is a great program, I like the coaches and playing in that atmosphere is going to be great.”
