Texas Tech has made its biggest offensive decision of the season, turning to veteran quarterback Tommy Castellanos over Will Hammond for Saturday's critical Big 12 showdown against No. 22 Arizona.
According to On3, Castellanos is expected to make his first start for the Red Raiders after the team's radio broadcast revealed the quarterback change Saturday morning.

The decision comes one week after Texas Tech suffered its first loss of the season, a 37-24 defeat at Cincinnati that exposed lingering problems with an offense that has struggled to find consistency under Hammond.
For head coach Joey McGuire, the quarterback switch represents a significant gamble with the Red Raiders' Big 12 championship and College Football Playoff aspirations hanging in the balance.
Hammond entered Saturday having thrown for 1,561 yards with just six touchdowns against six interceptions through seven games.
His performance against Cincinnati raised additional concerns. Hammond completed 24 of 37 passes for 227 yards, committed two turnovers and struggled to generate sustained scoring drives.
Texas Tech failed to score an offensive touchdown until the final minute against the Bearcats.
McGuire acknowledged afterward that failing to use Castellanos during the loss was a mistake.
"That was a total failure by my part of not, at some point, putting him in the game and seeing what he could do," McGuire said.
Now Castellanos gets an opportunity to show exactly what he can provide.
The fifth-year quarterback arrived in Lubbock in late August after previous stops at UCF, Boston College and Florida State.
Unlike Hammond, Castellanos brings extensive Power Four starting experience and a dual-threat skill set that could change the identity of Texas Tech's offense.
Before arriving at Texas Tech, Castellanos had accumulated more than 6,400 career passing yards and nearly 2,000 rushing yards.
His ability to escape pressure, extend plays and create offense with his legs gives offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich another dimension against an Arizona defense that will be expecting a desperate response from the Red Raiders.
Castellanos has been used primarily in specialized situations this season, producing two passing touchdowns and two rushing scores in limited action.
Texas Tech enters Saturday at 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play, facing an Arizona team carrying the same record.
The Wildcats present a formidable challenge, and the Red Raiders cannot afford another offensive performance resembling last week's showing in Cincinnati.
The question now is whether Castellanos simply provides an early spark or becomes Texas Tech's permanent starting quarterback.
Friday's reports suggested both quarterbacks would receive significant playing time, leaving open the possibility that Hammond will still play an important role Saturday.
But giving Castellanos the opening assignment sends a message: McGuire is no longer willing to wait for the offense to find its rhythm.

For a Texas Tech team with championship expectations, the time for experimentation is running out.
Saturday's game against Arizona could determine not only the direction of the Red Raiders' season, but also who leads their offense the rest of the way.
