Duke finished a commanding 3-0 in its preseason games, toppling Belmont, Tennessee and Kansas. Jon Scheyer’s team was comfortable winners in the first two games but had to fight for a victory against Bill Self’s Kansas.
In Duke’s 90-84 win over Kansas on Saturday, Jayhawks guard Tyran Stokes proved why he is the No. 1 player in his freshman class with 27 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. However, Duke’s Patrick Ngongba II scored 24 points to help his team get the victory.
Duke fans liked what they saw and have high hopes for the upcoming season.
“This team is gonna be ridiculous come March! This gonna be a fun season,” one fan said.
Jon Scheyer talks about Duke’s win
Jon Scheyer was content with how his team played in its last exhibition game before the season starts next week. He also expressed gratitude for Bill Self.
“This was everything we could have asked for and more. I just want to thank Coach Self, his staff, Kansas, the hospitality. This is a special thing, the fact that our two programs … we’ve played here one time. So, doing this home-and-home for an exhibition game, nothing about it felt like an exhibition game. The environment, everything here was beyond special,” Scheyer said.
“So, for us to go on the road, play a really good team, hungry team. I think we learned a lot. For me, I thought we showed a lot of toughness. You’re still figuring out what you have, even in these exhibition games.”
