A late evaluation in the 2027 recruiting class paid off for the Texas Longhorns in landing a Monday commitment from Richmond (Va.) Varina edge RJ Hudson.
The 6’2, 215-pounder, who projects more cleanly to the inside linebacker position, received his offer from the Longhorns last month and took an official visit for Saturday’s win over the Rebels.
Hudson saw his recruitment take off during the spring evaluation period, landing offers from Virginia Tech, Maryland, Syracuse, and Penn State, prompting an official visit to College Park in June. Two days later, Clemson officially extended an offer, and things moved quickly from there — the Tigers got Hudson on campus for an official visit a week later and landed a pledge from the consensus three-star prospect a week after that trip.
Clemson held on to Hudson’s commitment until early October, several weeks after Texas entered his recruitment.
With sub-11 second 100-meter times, Hudson was recruited to run track by Marshall and Norfolk State before his speed and production as a junior started to attract more attention in football.

Hudson is ranked as the No. 488 player nationally and the No. 44 edge in the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Texas now holds 22 pledges in the 2027 recruiting class, which ranks No. 7 nationally. With three edge prospects already pledge, the bigger need for the Longhorns is at linebacker, where Texas does not have any recruits who are classified at that position.
