After opening the season with a win against Western Carolina, the Tar Heels now turn their attention to the Wofford Terriers. North Carolina is 2-2 all-time against Wofford and have lost the past two times the Terriers visited Chapel Hill (though one of those losses was in Carmichael and not the Dean Dome). Can UNC end this streak or will Wofford at make it three straight road victories over the Heels?

Wofford Terriers

All-time Record

492-468, 1-6 in six tournament appearances, last appearance 2025

Best Former player

Wofford is not historically a great basketball school with no NBA players of note. Fletcher Magee gets the call here after finishing his four year career with the Terriers as the NCAA’s all-time career leader in made three-point field goals. Anytime you can knock JJ Redick off the top of a list, you get props from this writer. Magee was a two-time SoCon Player of the Year and won the Lou Henson Award (given to the MOP mid major player of the year). He has spent his entire professional career overseas and won the Montenegrin Cup in 2025 with Buducnost.

Head Coach

Kevin Giltner. Giltner, a former Terrier’s guard, has spent his entire head coaching career with Wofford. Giltner, who also was an assistant at Virginia Tech, went 19-13 in his first season as a head coach finishing second in the Southern Conference.

Last Season

Last season, Wofford went 19-13 and 11-7 in the SoCon finishing in a three way tie for second behind East Tennessee State after being picked to finish ninth (out of ten teams) in the preseason. The Terrier’s season ended with a three point loss in the opening round of the SoCon tournament to the seven seeded UNCG Spartans.

This Season

This Season, expectations for Wofford are higher as the team was picked to finish third in the SoCon conference. The Terriers opened their season with a 90-59 loss at Tennessee, who opened the season ranked eighth in the AP Poll.

Players of Note

Two players the Tar Heels should be aware of are both transfers from DII schools in guard Cam Lowe and center Evan Ramsey. Lowe, who spent the last two seasons at DII Black Hills St, led the Terriers with 14 points in the game against the Volunteers. Ramsey, who was a an All-American and Player of the Year for the DII Yellow Jackets, also had four rebounds and a steal in the opening loss. Ramsey is a seven foot transfer from DII UVA-Wise who finished the game against Tennessee with eight points, ten rebounds, and two blocks. He could be a problem for the Tar Heels down low after finishing as an all-conference player for the DII Cavaliers last season (yes the UVAW squad is also called the Cavaliers).

If you watched the game against the Catamounts and were not impressed then you probably have concerns about the Terriers. Honestly, I didn’t think much of this game until I realized that UNC has struggled and even lost the past two times Wofford visited the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill. If UNC wants to end that trend and avoid an early season upset, they will need to be focused and not overlook a well coached team that does have size but overall doesn’t have the talent to beat a P5 school at home.
