Texas A&M football entered the 2026 season with College Football Playoff expectations, but the Aggies have struggled to find consistency through the first eight games.
Following Saturday's 31-20 loss to Alabama, Texas A&M enters its bye week at 4-4 overall and 1-4 in SEC play. While the disappointing record has raised questions about the team's performance, several statistics reveal a surprising contrast between its strengths and weaknesses.
From an emerging freshman running back to an offense struggling to produce against SEC competition, here are five numbers that help explain Texas A&M's season.
1. Texas A&M failed to score a touchdown in two of its three SEC road games

One of Texas A&M's most concerning trends has been its inability to consistently generate offense away from Kyle Field.
The Aggies managed just six points in a 35-6 loss to LSU before producing another six in a 27-6 defeat against Missouri. All 12 points came from field goals, as Texas A&M failed to reach the end zone in either contest. The offense showed improvement against Alabama, scoring 20 points and producing two touchdowns in a 31-20 loss. Texas A&M even carried a 20-17 lead into the fourth quarter before the Crimson Tide scored 14 unanswered points to secure the victory.
Through three SEC road games, Texas A&M has scored 32 combined points, averaging just 10.7 per contest. The Aggies are also 0-3 away from Kyle Field, compared with a 4-1 record at home. With road trips to South Carolina and Oklahoma remaining, finding more consistent offensive production away from College Station will be critical to finishing the season strong.
2. Texas A&M held Alabama nearly 96 yards below its rushing average

Texas A&M limited Alabama to just 68 rushing yards on 28 attempts during Saturday's 31-20 loss, holding the Crimson Tide 95.9 yards below their pregame average of 163.9 yards per contest. The performance was also well below Texas A&M's average of 142.4 rushing yards allowed entering the matchup. However, Alabama's ground game had already struggled, producing just 54 yards against Tennessee the previous week.
While the Aggies controlled the rushing matchup, Alabama compensated with 311 passing yards and three touchdowns, highlighting both the strength of Texas A&M's run defense and its struggles against the pass.
3. True freshman KJ Edwards leads Texas A&M in rushing

True freshman KJ Edwards has emerged as Texas A&M's leading rusher with 360 yards on 55 carries, averaging 6.5 yards per attempt. The former Carthage standout has outgained Rueben Owens (332 yards on 78 carries) despite receiving 23 fewer attempts. Edwards has also exited two games with injuries, limiting his opportunities to build on those numbers.
His production includes a season-high 116 rushing yards against The Citadel and two touchdowns against Arkansas, making him one of the Aggies' most promising young playmakers entering the final four games.
4. Marcel Reed has thrown as many interceptions as touchdowns

Quarterback Marcel Reed entered the season expected to build on his success from Texas A&M's College Football Playoff appearance in 2025. However, Reed has completed 56.8% of his passes through eight games, throwing eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.
His turnover struggles were particularly noticeable against Alabama, where he threw two first-quarter interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. Although Reed responded with a passing touchdown and a rushing score, Texas A&M ultimately failed to maintain its offensive momentum in the second half.
The Aggies will need more consistent quarterback play over the final four games to improve their chances of finishing the season strong.
5. Texas A&M gained just 15 yards in the fourth quarter against Alabama

Texas A&M entered the fourth quarter against Alabama holding a 20-17 lead, but the Aggies' offense disappeared when it mattered most. The Aggies managed just 15 total yards in the final period, with all three possessions ending in three-and-outs. Alabama capitalized, scoring 14 unanswered points to secure a 31-20 victory.
The fourth-quarter collapse highlighted Texas A&M's struggles to finish games against SEC competition. Despite putting itself in position to pull off an upset, the Aggies couldn't sustain a drive when they needed one.
