The first postseason ranking from the College Football Playoff committee became public on Tuesday. LSU football and head coach Lane Kiffin remain on the outside looking in but not by much in the initial bracket.
The committee ranked the Tigers at No. 14. They are one of 10 teams out of the SEC in the initial top 25 list. Georgia leads the conference at No. 2 behind Miami and followed by No. 5 Alabama. No. 6 Kentucky, No. 7 Texas and No. 10 Ole Miss round out the conference's representation in the top 10.
LSU suffered two losses against conference opponents. The first came against No. 8 Ole Miss on the road. The second came against the Wildcats, who were unranked at the time. In the following two games, the purple and gold won by over 20 points.
The Tigers have critical games ahead that will affect their chances to play meaningful postseason football. They host the Crimson Tide and the Longhorns in the next two weeks. LSU travels to Tennessee, which ranks No. 13, for a Week 12 contest.
How did social media react to the first College Football Playoff committee ranking?
If you get worked up over the 1st CFB Playoff Rankings, that’s a you issue.
Especially with the slate of huge games this weekend that will change everything drastically.— Peter Burns (@PeterBurnsESPN) November 4, 2026
The College Football Playoff Rankings are TERRIBLE AND MAKE ZERO SENSE.

Some of the biggest names in the sports media landscape expressed displeasure with the College Football Playoff committee's decision. Multiple weeks of ranked matchups remain on the schedule, which could lead to major changes in the top 25. LSU faces three ranked teams before the end of the regular season.
LSU debuts at 14 in the first CFP rankings.
I’m not one to get too caught up in the early versions of these rankings; if you keep winning they tend to work themselves out.
But for an LSU team that’s been out of the running the last few years, it’s a welcome change to be in the…— Louis Johnson (@CFBLou) November 4, 2026
“Why did you rank Alabama so high?”
“They beat Mississippi State”
Words I never thought Id hear https://t.co/VeuLASSUmo— Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) November 4, 2026
Alabama being that high is an absolute joke. https://t.co/EieI1tqCbL

Alabama at 5 is one of the most stunning things I’ve ever seen. Forget about SEC bias. There’s like three SEC teams alone that should be ahead of them.
In no way should they be above Ole Miss or Texas. pic.twitter.com/ji2EOldDN4— Brandon Walker (@BFW) November 4, 2026
Bama being 5th is going to make our win Saturday soooo much sweeter https://t.co/zfor5zU1xl

Plenty of social media users called out the committee for where it placed Alabama, LSU's next opponent. Dave Portnoy was among those who posted about where the Crimson Tide fell on the initial list.

Expanding to 24 teams does not solve the problem of a wildly inconsistent selection committee.

Some social media users made references to various postseason formats for college football, from the pending 24 team bracket to the bowl championship subdivision (BCS) ranking system. LSU would make the playoffs in expanded field. The Tigers won two national championships during the BCS days.
