The Alabama Crimson Tide landed inside the top five of the first College Football Playoff rankings, and even plenty of fans in Tuscaloosa were caught off guard. Here is why the selection committee put the two-loss Tide there.
The first College Football Playoff rankings are out, and the Alabama Crimson Tide checked in at No. 5. That has a lot of people up in arms, and not just rival fan bases. Even Alabama supporters are surprised by how high the Crimson Tide landed in the committee’s initial top 25.
So the question becomes, what exactly is the committee seeing? Before I get into that, here is where Alabama stands in the A to Z Sports Playoff Predictor tool. The Crimson Tide sit at 65% to make the College Football Playoff, which is among the highest odds in the field. I believe both the committee and the tool are telling you the same thing about this team.

Why the committee ranked Alabama at No. 5
As I posted on X, this ranking comes down to three main factors in my opinion:
– Performance – Roster health – Strength of schedule
Plenty of people are going to look at the two losses and ask how Alabama could possibly sit ahead of a team like UCLA, which is undefeated. The answer is the schedule.
For one, Alabama has a win over a Mississippi State team that had Kamario Taylor at the time. The Crimson Tide also beat South Carolina, a ranked team that just took down the Tennessee Volunteers. Then there’s the win over the Kentucky Wildcats, who seem to be everybody’s favorite team in the SEC.
Additionally, the Tide played the Georgia Bulldogs down to the wire. If not for a botched call at the end of that game, Alabama very well could have won it.
The Tennessee loss needs context
Yes, Alabama got smacked around by Tennessee. Nobody is going to argue otherwise. However, that game came one week after the physical battle with Georgia, and the Crimson Tide were extremely banged up when they took the field against the Vols.
That’s where roster health comes into play. The committee isn’t just looking at the final scores. It is looking at who was available, how a team performed even in its losses, and whether those results tell the full story.
So while I think No. 5 is probably too high, I don’t think any unbiased, objective Alabama fan, supporter, or media member would argue with that either. It’s a generous spot. But it’s a generous spot for a reason.
The committee is rewarding the SEC grind
This ranking is the committee telling everyone that if the SEC is going to play nine conference games, and if its teams are going to face this level of play week in and week out, this is the result. You’re going to get a likely three-loss SEC team in the field this year. It could be Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, Ole Miss, or you name it.
And in my opinion, you should. When the Big 12, the Big Ten, and the ACC are lining up cupcakes like Rutgers, Maryland, and Baylor every other week, an SEC team with a couple of losses deserves the benefit of the doubt over a team that has taken a much easier road.
The committee is showing you what matters. The health of your roster, the way you perform on the field (even in losses), and the strength of your schedule all count. That is why Alabama is the fifth-ranked team in the country, and I expect that philosophy to keep showing up as the rankings take shape over the next few weeks.
